Incretin is a peptide hormone produced by gastrointestinal tract after meal, which can promote the secretion of insulin by islet β cells

It includes glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Glucose dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP), which are secreted by L cells in ileum and colon and K cells in duodenum, respectively. GLP-1 and GIP, as active hormones, can be released into the blood circulation within a few minutes after ingestion of food, but they will be rapidly degraded and inactivated by serine protease DPP-4.
